20th March Hockey
U13 North England Finals
The KGS U13s finished 3rd in the North of England in an ultimately disappointing afternoon in Leeds. The girls went into the competition having scored over 60 goals in 9 games so far and they continued this form in their first group game as they beat RGS Newcastle 4-0 thanks to excellent attacking play by Bo Madden, Hattie Madden and Natasha Hartley-Smith. This was followed by a tense game against King Williams College who put up a stern resistance. KGS battled hard and showed great composure late on to run out 3-1 winners. This meant that KGS had qualified from the group stage with a game to spare but still had to play a tough Wakefield side to determine who would go through as group winners. Another tense game resulted in a 1-1 draw after a late equaliser from Amy Merrick; sending KGS through as group winners to play Stockport in the semi-finals. Despite dominating the semi-final for the majority of the game, the KGS girls simply couldn’t find a way past an inspired Stockport goalkeeper. A late Stockport short corner was well struck into the bottom corner of the KGS goal and ultimately resulted in a 1-0 defeat. KGS did bounce back to win the 3rd/4th place playoff 2-0 against Manchester High School to finish 3rd overall in the North of England. A fantastic achievement overall but a disappointing outcome considering the high standard of hockey the girls played throughout this whole competition. Well done to all 11 girls who have been a part of the squad throughout the various rounds of the tournament.
Cheadle Hulme Hockey VII’s tournament
Wed 21st March
The 1st VII enjoyed their last tournament of the season away at Cheadle Hulme. The games were fast on the 7 aside pitch with the ball moving quickly from end to end. The girls met Cheadle Hulme in their first game losing out to a strong Cheadle VII 4-3. The second game KGS met Withington Girls School. The game was even with both teams having their chances. Charlotte McDonald converted early on but KGS could not hold off Withington as they converted twice to leave the score at 2-1. The final group game was against Wilmslow, KGS looked strong in attack and defence resulting in several shots on goal. A McDonald hat trick left the final score at 3-0. A great day of Hockey to finish off a fantastic season.
