Kirkham Grammar School Christmas Appeal
Did you know?
That one in fifty households across the country have used a food bank over the last year – and many of them are living with illness or disability. The shocking state of poverty in the UK can be seen by the huge increase in the number of foodbanks. Current research (2019) indicates that there are now over 2000 food banks in the UK and over 1.6 million three-day emergency food supplies were given to people in crisis by Trussell Trust food banks in the last year.
Only 6 miles from our school in Blackpool, St Cuthberts SVP open their doors every Monday to well in excess of 60 needy people many of whom have had their benefits stopped or reduced by paying back ‘hardship loans’; it is a vicious circle for many vulnerable people and families with young children. These numbers increase dramatically as the weather gets colder and Christmas approaches.
Each week St Cuthbert’s give out bags of food, toiletries and sandwiches to those in need. When funds permit they also give a £4 food voucher to spend on food at the local Premier store. They are totally dependent on donations of food from local churches and the goodwill of many generous people.
Anne who runs the foodbank said “Our needy truly appreciated Kirkham Grammar’s generosity and kindness last Christmas; may God bless you now and always”.
We are hoping that members of our Kirkham Grammar School family get behind our Christmas Appeal and we are asking that each form fills a box with items desperately needed by the foodbank:
• Beans
• Soup
• Rice pudding
• Tinned spaghetti
• jars of meat/fish spread
• Tuna
Thank you in advance for your support.
