1st XI v Stockport Grammar

The 1st XI kicked off their post-Christmas season with a 2-0 victory. Great composure, team work and enthusiasm secured the victory after two great goals from Amy Merrick and Anna Wilkinson. Lucy Barrow controlled the midfield making some excellent passes to allow the forwards to run riot up front!

U14 Hockey v Stockport Grammar

The U14s dominated the match from start to finish though it took them 15 minutes to find their composure on the ball. Once they got going there was no stopping them and they just created one attack after another with the defence rarely tested.  Six goals from Jess Cole and a goal each for Alicia Threlfall, Maisie Bailey and Rachel Watson gave the girls an almighty lead. Stockport scored a goal against the run of play in the last couple of minutes. A 9-1 victory was a great way to start the New Year!

U13 Hockey v Stockport Grammar

The U13s started 2020 with an emphatic 6-0 win against Stockport Grammar. KGS dominated the early stages, worked the ball into shooting positions quickly but were unable to find a way past the Stockport keeper. After a few close calls in defence, KGS took the lead just before half time thanks to a strike from Lilly Jones and this lead was then doubled by Frankie Margerison. Despite the 2-0 lead, KGS knew they weren’t playing their best hockey and needed to improve in the second half.

With a great emphasis on pressing high up the pitch, KGS regularly recovered the ball in the Stockport half and worked the ball wide creating countless chances. Frankie Margerison controlled things well in midfield and distributed the ball effectively to the players around her as well as adding a second goal for herself. Keira Tomes was a constant threat on the right wing as her pace and direct running caused the Stockport defence countless problems. Further goals from Lilly Jones, Alexa Anderson and Keira Tomes rounded off an excellent second half performance.

U12 A & B v Stockport Grammar

The U12 squads also had two very competitive matches on Saturday against Stockport Grammar. The A team applied pressure throughout the game but came across a very strong Stockport GK who saved some excellent shots. Sophie Rawlinson made some excellent runs and was well supported by Poppy Dodds and Libby Langley. Zea Trend made some excellent runs up front creating chance after chance. The final score was 0-0.

In the B team game the ball travelled from end to end with both teams having chances. Rosie Helliwell and Leoma Gill made some excellent tackles in defence whilst Amelia Sharpe created some great chances up front with Brooke Medhurst. Unfortunately the result didn’t go our way with Stockport taking a 1-0 victory.

Rugby

U17s KIRKHAM 55 - HUTTON 5

The under 17 Development Squad began the term with a convincing win over local school, Hutton Grammar, running in nine tries in the process. The large squad of 25 players all had an opportunity for game time and the tries were spread amongst the whole squad. Josh Lynch began the scoring after neat interplay with winger Ben Haworth and Captain Cammie Thompson surged through for the second score minute later. Kirkham managed to create several opportunities from set plays, with the lineout functioning particularly well. Further scores came from Owen Fisher, Marcus Blake and Haworth which rounded off a dominant first half by Kirkham.

The second half saw four more tries scored by Kirkham but Hutton were determined to make a game of it and enjoyed much more possession as Kirkham rang the changes. Fifth form pupils Yande Nkonge and Harry Thompson carried well with the former scurrying over for the penultimate try. Scrum half Harry Swayne had a successful morning with the boot, converting 8/9 tries.

U15s v Hutton Grammar 

The Kirkham U15s travelled to Hutton and completed a comprehensive 53-12 victory. Straight from the off, KGS controlled the play and after 15 minutes were 36-0 up thanks to tries from James Sutcliffe, Archie Dowds (2) and Aiden Hayward (2). The blue and whites were able to flood the bench early to give everyone plenty of game time. Dom Edwards, Jorge Zacharias and Will Mathison all put in excellent shifts in attack and defence. Freddie Tarrant, who has continued to shine this year, scored an excellent solo effort after a brilliant turnover from Wills Austin to close the first half out at 43-0

The second half was a much tighter affair as Hutton grew in confidence, but Kirkham still managed to create 2 excellent tries with Hayward completing his hat trick.

U14s v Hutton Grammar School

WON 38-7

The U14s started well against a physical Hutton side. Captain James Stacey finished off a period of possession with Kirkham’s first try early in the game. This was shortly followed by a try from short range by prop Saif Amr. Hutton, playing into a strong wind, started to gain some territory. However, strong Kirkham defensive work from Wills Gut and Seb Kelly managed to turn the ball over. Kirkham’s Harry Reay, who made some strong runs scored soon after. Before half time Reay scored a second try and second row David Santa Soto scored Kirkham’s fifth try of the half.

Kirkham played into the wind in the second half and it was much more difficult to get near the try line. Hutton scored early in the half and Kirkham managed one more score through full back Harry Tomlinson. Callum Hill successfully converted four of Kirkham’s six tries making the final score 38-7 to Kirkham.

KGS U12s Jedis v Hutton Grammar School

The KGS under 12’s Jedis made a promising start to the fixture with great handling skills despite windy conditions. Kirkham found the space well and scored as a result of great team play. Hutton were once again stretched as Kirkham followed a similar pattern in attack. Kirkham then put their defence to work with great tackling from every player, this was evident throughout the match as the Jedis did not conceded any points.

Kirkham started the second half well, adding some tries to their tally. However, Hutton were persistent and kept adding pressure onto the Jedis, Kirkham handled the pressure very well and were able to turn the ball over and return back into the oppositions half. Kirkham was able to score 6 tries against Hutton and concede no tries. Tries were scored by James Singleton, Max Musson, Tom Chapman, Tom Carey, Joel Ashton and Tom Bloomfield. 

KGS U12s Wizards v Hutton Grammar School

From the first to the final whistle, the game consisted of highly intense rugby from the Wizards. The competitive game tested Kirkham’s defence due to the strong ball carrying from the dominant Hutton team. However, due to the outstanding tackling from Cieran Milligan, Lewis Simpson and the rest of the team, the Wizards were able to disrupt Hutton and make some effective counter-attacks. The Wizards were able to find the open space via some impressive handling skills and were able to score tries through James Singleton and Cieran Milligan.

Unfortunately, a Hutton player was injured at the end of the game and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.
