After reaching the quarter finals of two prestigious tournaments at Christ Brecon and The Surrey 7s, KGS 1st Seven competed in the Society of Heads North 7s at Hill House School Doncaster. Despite again missing a number of regular first choice starters, Connor James’ young team played some impressive sevens defeating Newcastle School for Boys in the first game by 48-7 and then accounting for a solid Ashville College side 35-5,with Spencer Cope, Callum Grieve and Andrew Bullman getting on the scoring sheet .
In the semi-final, Kirkham played Welbeck College. KGS started well and Kieran Wilkinson, probably playing his last game for school, was outstanding scoring 3 quick tries as KGS sailed into the final to play host school Hill House. Despite opening the scoring with an Andrew Bullman try, Kirkham were pegged back by a determined Hill House side containing a number of Yorkshire Carnegie players and at half time the teams were squared at 7-7. KGS knew they were in a fight and responded in a very positive manner with tries from Callum Griev, Tom Giles and Will Gargett to give KGS A 28-7 victory.
This success follows on from the recent excellent news that four KGS pupils have been selected for England Under 18 side to play a number of internationals in the coming weeks: Kieran Wilkinson, Sam Dugdale, Connor Doherty and Teddy Leatherbarrow will all be capped for England whilst at under 16 level Jonty Cope will represent Scotland in a tournament in Wales.
