Swim Gala
KGS v QEGS Blackburn
A large mixed Kirkham Grammar School swimming squad, comprising of U12s up to seniors, competed in the annual Gala at QEGS Blackburn on Tuesday 7 November 2023. There were several notable contributions from swimmers competing in up to two age groups up including I Osborne and J Wright. Several new members of the squad had eye catching swims in particular, B Faith, H Townley, P Hargreaves and S Boughen. At the upper end of the age groups, A Harling, J Wong, A Whittle and S Gregson were excellent. The attitude of the whole squad, led by Upper Sixth pupil, L Denn, was first class and a winning margin of 142-99 was well deserved by the whole KGS squad.

KGS 1st XI Hockey v Sedbergh School
Kirkham Grammar School 1st XI hockey squad took to the pitch in their second England Hockey Tier One league game against Sedbergh School on Tuesday 7 November 2023. KGS experienced a slow start and were punished with an early goal from Sedbergh. The girls worked hard in all areas of the pitch demonstrating real patience and determination. Unfortunately, Kirkham went 2-0 down early in the second half but fought back at pace with a great attacking run from Tomlinson setting Cole free on goal to convert the first comeback goal. Procter converted soon after with a great shot converting in the corner of the goal. With all to play for, KGS had their foot firmly on the gas with Tomlinson, Cole and Procter working hard to press high up the pitch. A great breakaway run set Tomes free creating a one on one with the keeper. Tomes calmly slotted the ball away to take the score to 3-2 to KGS. Unfortunately, Kirkham couldn't seal the win, with Sedbergh hitting back with an equaliser late on in the game. Kirkham take a further one point in the league system as they prepare to take on Oakham School on Wednesday in their third national game of the season. An outstanding all round performance from each and every squad member.
KGS U14 Hockey v The Grange School - Tier One Cup Game
In a thrilling U14 cup clash against The Grange School, Kirkham Grammar School U14 hockey girls showcased dominance with the majority of play and impressive breaks. Schofield ignited the scoreboard with the first goal, setting the tone for our relentless pursuit. Despite a spirited comeback from The Grange in the second half, their cohesive unit persevered, sealing the victory with another goal courtesy of Bailey. The girls' unwavering determination and dedication were evident throughout, highlighting their resilience and teamwork. With this commendable performance, we now proudly stand among the final four contenders in the North for the Tier One championship.

U12A v Stockport Grammar School U13B
Kirkham Grammar School U12A team were on fire as they took on Stockport's U13B team. The girls worked hard from the start creating opportunities early on to convert in front of goal. Faith and Hargreaves linked up well with support from Godbold and Butler-Reid. Godbold converted first from a well-worked short corner with Townley following up with a second. Goal after goal kept coming with both Butler-Reid's playing their part in attack resulting in several short corners. Cubbins had some work to do in goal to keep the Stockport side out. A great performance from a very young, yet talented, team. Final score 10-0 to Kirkham Grammar School.
KGS U13B Hockey v Stockport Grammar School
Kirkham Grammar School U13B hockey team played Stockport Grammar School U13A team. The squad fought to the bitter end to try and secure a goal. Unfortunately, their efforts were not rewarded. The girls are looking forward to developing their play in future practices.
KGS U14 Hockey v Stockport Grammar School
In their match against Stockport Grammar School, Kirkham Grammar School U14 hockey team encountered unexpected challenges as the frozen pitch led to a switch from 11-a-side to 7-a-side, limiting playing time for their sizeable squad. Despite this setback, the girls displayed resilience, initiating the scoring with rapid goals from Edwards and Bailey. While these goals set a positive tone, the match evolved into a test of endurance due to the reduced playing time. Despite maintaining possession for the majority of the game, securing additional goals proved elusive. The girls, adept at moving the ball, faced occasional setbacks, allowing Stockport a few breaks. Final score 2-0 to Kirkham Grammar School.
KGS U15 Hockey v Stockport Grammar School
In an exciting Saturday morning clash, the U15s faced Stockport Grammar School. The first half showcased skilful play down the line, providing numerous opportunities. Despite strong teamwork, communication, and several shots on goal, the ball eluded the net. The second half witnessed determined efforts, especially from the solid back four in defence. Both teams had ample scoring chances, but the match concluded with a victory for Kirkham's opponents, with A Bunday scoring for KGS. Final score 3-1 to Stockport Grammar School.

KGS 2nd XV v Cheadle Hulme School
Kirkham Grammar School 2nd XV faced Cheadle Hulme School. A cold and wintery start to the game in slippery conditions made the first 20 minutes a very low scoring affair. Kirkham were able to show their dominance in the scrum with the front row showing off their strength. The sun started to shine and dried the ball a little for Kirkham to start playing some good rugby. One of the stand out players, Carter, opened up the scoring and was a powerful runner throughout the game, and saw three or four Cheadle defenders to take him to ground. Captain, Causey, lead his troops throughout the game with his physical presence carrying and turning over ball so that the backs could have some fun. This hard work meant that Case got on the end of some brilliant team attack and went in for a brace before the half. After half time, Kirkham were pretty comfortable and continued to apply pressure with some brilliant individual tries from Bamford showing his wheels. Norman finished off the scoring with a fantastic solo effort, showing his power and pace. Kirkham's second team now look forward to facing Hartpury College on Wednesday 15 November. Final score 61-8 to Kirkham Grammar School.
KGS U14 Rugby v Cheadle Hulme School
Kirkham Grammar School U14 rugby squad hosted Cheadle Hulme School. The game was played in tough conditions and on a heavy pitch, but despite this was played in excellent spirits. Cheadle came out of the blocks quickly and scored two well worked tries. Kirkham finally got themselves into the match and started to step up their physicality. This paid off and they finally broke the deadlock in the second half with just 10 minutes to go thanks to some good play from Grigg. The last 10 minutes proved to be all KGS as they camped on the Cheadle try line. Davies, Walls and Taylor tried to force their way over but credit to Cheadle who defended stoutly to run out winners. Kelso deserves a mention for his outstanding leadership. Final score 12-5 to Cheadle Hulme School.
KGS U13A v Cheadle Hulme School
The Under 13A rugby squad continued their exciting series of matches this term with a very hard fought draw against Cheadle Hulme School. All of the early possession was enjoyed by the visitors who went hammer and tongues at KGS, who to their credit, soaked up all the pressure with some very effective tackling and defensive co-ordination. The game remained 0-0 until half time, after which the game continued to ebb and flow, with Kirkham slowly gaining the upper hand with their direct running which led to a try by Elleray. A second try followed soon after by Medhurst to give KGS a much needed cushion as the home players knew that Cheadle would not lie down. Sure enough Cheadle answered with a try after a defensive error and then levelled the game late on after a period of pressure. A fantastic game with neither team willing to give up. A draw was a very fair reflection of the game. Final score 2-2.
KGS U13B v Cheadle Hulme School
Kirkham Grammar School U13B rugby squad secured a fantastic win against a physical and motivated Cheadle Hulme side. The game was very well balanced from the beginning with strong attacking runs and great defence from both sides. KGS were on top for most of the game but couldn't quiet put the game to bed. Fowora was the man of the match with some devastating ball in hand runs. Momentum was with KGS and with a never give up attitude, they managed to secure the game not long before the final whistle. A great result for this enthusiastic team. Well done. Final score 20-15 to Kirkham Grammar School.
KGS U12A v Cheadle Hulme School
Kirkham Grammar School's U12A team faced Cheadle Hulme School and KGS showed great determination and teamwork throughout the match. The players showed impressive running and ball-handling skills, putting up a strong fight against a difficult opponent. Despite the final score not favouring Kirkham Grammar School, the team's spirit remained high, and they continued to compete with enthusiasm until the final whistle. The match served as a valuable learning experience, highlighting areas for improvement and growth. As the season progresses, the U12A team has the opportunity to refine their approach, build on their strengths, and address any areas that need improvement. With the dedication demonstrated by players such as Cox, Sumner, Dunne, and Swindlehurst, there is undoubtedly potential for the team to achieve greater success in upcoming matches. Final score 25-10 to Cheadle Hulme School.
Cross Country
Kirkham Grammar School U13 boys and girls cross country squads competed in the annual St Mary's Hall Cross Country event on Thursday 9 November. The team faced a very tough course which consisted of a two lap race (3400 metres) around the undulating terrain of the golf course. Underfoot conditions proved to be challenging for all competitors however, the KGS runners coped admirably.
In the boys event (pictured right), T Milligan was the first runner home finishing seventh overall, followed by T Parker (20th), C Oliver (23rd), M Duckett (24th), M Elleray (34th) and J Walker-Basham (36th). The final member of the squad, H Lawson, came in 47th, after sustaining an unfortunate calf injury during the race. The team finished in fifth place overall.
In the girls event (pictured at the top of the page), a fantastic team effort was seen from all seven girls with Mitchell the first KGS runner back, finishing in third place. The team finished in second place overall.
