KGS U14 cricketers kept up their unbeaten run on Saturday fixtures this year with a comfortable victory at Giggleswick. On a glorious summer day, KGS batted first. After losing 2 quick wickets, McKay and Whittle steadied the ship, with McKay showing more of his potential with a well-timed 16 runs. Star of the show was again Clarke with a magnificent 92 runs off 44 balls, including an incredible 11 sixes – his clean hitting of the ball is a rarity for someone his age. O'Malley played a cameo at the end of the innings to ensure KGS attained a challenging score of 144 for the opposition to chase. Giggleswick started their innings well, with the openers putting on nearly 40 runs before wickets began to tumble. Webster captained the side very sensibly giving many KGS players a bowl. Davies, Chaudhry and Wiltshire all bowled good spells, with a deserved wicket apiece. The best bowlers of the day were O'Malley and McKay with 2 wickets each, with Clarke chipping in with a couple of fine catches. TITLE: KIRKHAM GRAMMAR SCHOOL U15s WIN LANCASHIRE CRICKET CUP
The Kirkham Grammar School U15s made history on Thursday 20 June 2024, by becoming the first side in the school's history to win a Lancashire Cricket Cup.
Having convincingly beaten Rossall School in the Quarter Final by 8 wickets 2 days before, KGS arrived at Northern Cricket Club delighted to see good surfaces and sunny skies.
In the Semi-Final, KGS won the toss and batted against a strong Bolton School side. Straight from the off Khan (73*) and Black, set the tone well, with some strong batting which saw KGS get off to a flier reaching 45 off the power play overs. When Black was dismissed (45-1) Captain Yates strode out to build on the score. He rotated the strike well and just as he looked as he was getting going, the Bolton bowler made some sharp work to run him out (88-2). Khan continued serenely whilst, from the other end, Dawson-Gerrard and Clarke built partnerships, which put an above par 144-5 off the allotted 20 overs.
In the second innings, Bolton's innings never really got going, with some good bowling from Shah and Yates, which saw wickets tumble and the run rate increase. Some fine work from keeper Ball saw the remaining opener run out and Bolton 45-6. Hill and Webster bowled very well to dismiss the remaining batsman as the Bolton innings was terminated on 60 all out and an 84 run win.
In the Final, KGS met Merchant Taylor's School Crosby and again they elected to bat. Black and Khan, yet again got Kirkham off to a flier and after 6 overs the score stood at 62. Merchants fought back well and dismissed Black and Yates with some good catches, which brought Dawson-Gerrard to the crease. It was at this stage the game shifted completely in KGS' favour. Dawson-Gerrard hit a belligerent 62 off 32 balls with Khan carrying his bat again for an excellent 57 not out, giving KGS a very imposing 163-4 on the board.
Just like the semi-final, Kirkham's bowlers came out firing, with Shah, Yates, Hill and Khan all applying excellent pressure. This pressure eventually saw wickets tumble with regularity and after 10 overs MTS were 42-6 and the game was all but over. Some excellent KGS fielding and bowling from Webster closed the game out well with the innings ending on 90 all out, which started the Kirkham Grammar School celebrations.
It was an outstanding achievement from the KGS Cricket Team and they now host Sedbergh School in the regional playoff. The winner will then face off with three other schools in the hope that they can qualify for the Nationals in September.
