Co-Curricular Activities:
Sport & Physical Education
For both physical and social benefits it is felt important that all pupils participate in regular Games lessons, in an activity of their choice. Pupils with a talent for one of the school's major sports are actively encouraged to opt for that sport so that the individual can continue to make progress, but also to contribute to the maintenance of the high standards of our representative teams.
The school caters for a diversity of interests during Games. A large number of activities such as functional fitness training, gym classes, badminton, tennis and swimming are offered using excellent local facilities.
Major School Sports - Winter
BOYS
Rugby Football
The senior section of rugby at KGS has four teams, a 1st XV, Head's 1st XV, 2nd XV and U16 XV. The aim is to provide the opportunity for all senior pupils to play rugby at an appropriate level if they choose to play. The senior teams play each Saturday and occasionally on Wednesday afternoons. The fixture list is constantly expanding and teams travel across the country to play tough, prestigious matches to test their abilities. The school continues to produce many excellent 1st XVs, Schools' Internationals, North of England and County players. The school also runs a rigorous Sevens programme with teams taking part in many regional and national competitions.
GIRLS
Hockey
Hockey at KGS continues to be a strong force throughout the North West of England. Both the 1st XI and 2nd XI have a full fixture programme on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Excellence is promoted through a regular training programme which operates outside curriculum time. Such commitment is rewarded with trips abroad and a healthy enjoyment of sport. Junior Hockey Squads from U12 to U15 level also run during the Winter season with regular training and fitness sessions as well as Saturday fixtures and the England Hockey National Championships.
BOYS AND GIRLS
Swimming
The school runs very successful swimming teams up to and including senior level for boys and girls. Senior swimmers are most welcome given the positive influence they exert over younger swimmers, and the considerable input they make in their own right. The school swims competitively against many other HMC schools throughout the school year.
Cross-Country
The school competes in the Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre Championships as well as the North West schools event at St Mary's Hall, and the Sedbergh Invitational. It also competes in the National Schools Biathlon Championships and the ESAA National Cross-Country event.
Golf
Pupils represent the school through the Independent Schools Golf Association and competitions include the Independent Schools' Matchplay Tournament and the ISGA Northern Schools' Cup.
Multi-Sports
Pupils who wish to take part in sports which do not require participation in extensive practice and weekend fixtures are offered a varied package of sports. This includes four to six week blocks of sports such as football, volleyball, badminton and tennis.
Fitness
Sixth Form pupils have the option of spending time in our school gym. Following an induction, pupils can be given a training programme by a qualified personal trainer. This is a popular option with many pupils at KGS showing great interest in their own fitness having been so active through their junior years.
Fitness Instructor/Conditioning Session
The school has a specialist personal trainer who runs circuit training sessions during senior games lessons offering pupils the opportunity to train in larger groups.
Major School Sports - Summer
Cricket
1st and 2nd teams are fielded regularly each week with matches being played against teams from Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cumbria and the MCC. Winter nets take place after Christmas, and during the summer, training takes place twice a week.
GIRLS
Athletics
It is extremely difficult to arrange senior girls' athletics matches, as the majority of schools that we regularly compete against throughout the year do not field teams at this age group. However, though the girls do not compete on a weekly basis, a large number assist the PE Department in the coaching of our younger athletes and the organisation and running of all of our home athletics matches. Those with outstanding performances are nominated for Lancashire Schools' trials.
Tennis
The school is fortunate to have a first class facility for tennis; the Astroturf converts to twelve tennis courts. Many senior girls take the opportunity to play, some at a social level and some to a competitive level. Regular practice sessions operate outside curriculum time. Frequent fixtures against local schools take place during Wednesday afternoon games and on Saturdays.
Co-Curricular Activities:
Clubs & Societies
The school boasts a wide range of clubs and societies and pupils are strongly encouraged to participate. All operate under the auspices of the Pupil Voice School Council. They may take place on any lunchtime during the week or after school. Clubs and societies fluctuate from year to year but the following are examples of some of the more popular and enduring:
Art, Astronomy, Badminton, Charities, Chess, Climbing, Coding, Craft, Drama, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Fiction Addiction, Greek, Gymnastics, Model Railway, Music, Politics Society, Science Club, Scribblers, Sixth Form Discussion Group, Ski Society, Spanish, Table Tennis, Target Rifle, Volleyball, Young Engineers, Young Enterprise.
The Combined Cadet Force
Consisting of the Army and Air Force Sections, the CCF numbers over 200 cadets and is a voluntary activity, which is popular among some Sixth Formers. There is a Field Day away from school every term and there is an annual camp during the summer. Sixth Formers fill leadership roles as NCOs and equip themselves with teamwork, problem solving and disciplinary skills, which serve them well in later life. There is strong emphasis on outdoor pursuits such as water sports, fell-walking, orienteering, flying, abseiling, shooting and assault courses. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is also available.
Drama
Drama is taken seriously both within and outside the curriculum. It is offered as an academic subject to GCSE and A Level. There is a major production annually and Sixth Form pupils take part in a large number of theatre visits both locally and further afield. Large numbers of pupils undertake LAMDA (London Association of Music and Dramatic Arts) awards.
House System
The House System is a thriving and integral part of our educational offering at Kirkham Grammar School and all pupils are expected to play their part. Four Houses, led by Sixth Form pupils as House Captains, Vice Captains and helpers, contest some 28 different events each year.
Music
Apart from its place in the formal curriculum, musical activity is greatly encouraged throughout the school. There are various school choirs, an orchestra, concert band and swing band, as well as other more informal groups. Interest is stimulated by an annual Inter-House Music Festival, which regularly attracts more than 250 participants. An annual programme of some ten concerts offers musicianship high on quality and entertainment value throughout the year. A large number of pupils undertake Associated Board Examinations in a wide variety of instruments tutored by peripatetic music teachers and the school music staff.
Charity
The school is very active in raising money for charity. Special events are staged on a regular basis resulting in several thousands of pounds being raised each year for a variety of worthwhile charitable causes. Many Sixth Form pupils participate in community service working in schools, with the handicapped and the aged.
