Pupils from Kirkham Grammar School enjoyed a tour around Preston to see two commemorative plaques for the Dick, Kerr Ladies’ Football Team, who became famous during the First World War.
The pupils are all in the cast of the latest school production, Famous and Forgotten, by Andrew Colley and Fiona Ross. This play recognises the contribution these northern sporting ladies made during the First Word War, and also how they were later prevented from playing football by the FA and consequently “forgotten”.
Given that this year marks the centenary of the end of World War I, it is a very poignant and local reminder of how the Great War had an impact on everyone. The cast was particularly moved seeing the names of various characters from the play listed on the memorial at Preston North End’s ground.
